Eliza started dancing at the age of 15 at her mother’s studio, leading to a career spanning over five decades, with no signs of stopping soon. Since then, she has danced for a variety of companies across the country, including Atlanta Ballet, Tampa Ballet, Louisville Ballet, and the company her husband, Kip Watson, founded, Southern Ballet Theatre (now Orlando Ballet). With her talents going beyond the stage and into the studio, she eventually began a second career as a dance teacher, starting off alongside her own dancing, before becoming her main pursuit. Eliza and Kip started Harwood-Watson Dance Studios in 1997, basing their teaching upon the concept that “In every child there is a seed”. This was evident as thanks to the welcoming and nurturing environment they had created, along with a strong focus on proper technique and artistry across genres, many of their students have gone on to have successful careers in dance and entertainment across the performing arts. Through her studio and overall, Eliza has always engaged in community outreach, working at after school programs and underserved communities, truly working to fulfill the studio’s aforementioned mission. The studio’s children’s performance company, The HWDS Performers, of which she is the director, has also taken part in community enrichment, performing at nursing homes and schools in the area.

Mia took her first dance class at the age of 2 and a half, and it’s been her passion ever since! Dancing with Harwood-Watson Dance Studios her entire life, she started with Vaganova-based ballet training before expanding her studies into as many genres as she could. When invited to join her studio’s performance company at the age of 9, she gladly accepted, as she has always been one to take any and all dance opportunities possible, even at an early age. Mia’s hard work and determination continued, getting her first pair of pointe shoes at 11, choreographing her first full-length dance at 16 after plenty of co-choreographing with others, and starting teaching at 18 after years of assisting and substituting. When teaching, she aims to meet students where they are to build strong, versatile, and creative dancers, while keeping the art form enjoyable and accessible for everyone. After college, her aspirations include joining a professional dance company, choreographing her own works for dancers of all levels and abilities, and community outreach to help make dance more accessible. Mia believes dance is for everyone who wishes to partake so alongside her aforementioned goals, she hopes to start a professional company of her own, open to all ethnicities, body types, abilities, and identities. When she’s not dancing, she’s almost certainly crafting, playing video games, listening to metal, or watching sports!
